How to Choose an Extrusion Blow Molding Machine

Start from your container, not from a model number. This guide explains the extrusion methods and drive configurations described in Waley Machinery's catalogue, the six details to confirm before requesting a quotation, and where to find the full specifications on the official site.

This page is an independent selection aid. For current specifications, see the manufacturer's official catalogue.

How Extrusion Blow Molding Works

Extrusion blow molding makes hollow plastic containers in three steps:

Three steps of extrusion blow molding Step 1: Plasticize. Step 2: Form the parison. Step 3: Blow and cool. 1 · Plasticize Resin is melted in the extruder 2 · Form the parison Melt is shaped into a hollow tube 3 · Blow & cool Tube is inflated in the mold, then ejected

Machine Selection: Extrusion Methods and Drive Options

Accumulator and continuous extrusion describe how the parison is formed. All-electric servo describes the machine's drive system, rather than a separate extrusion method. Consider the extrusion method and drive configuration alongside your container's size, wall structure, and end use.

Accumulator Blow Molding

For large hollow containers. The extruder plasticizes continuously while melt accumulates in the accumulator cylinder, then is pushed out in a single shot for uniform wall thickness.

Typical products: industrial drums, IBC tanks, automotive fuel tanks.

Continuous Extrusion Blow Molding

For small and medium containers, extruded continuously. Multilayer co-extrusion options build a container wall from more than one layer — for example an oxygen-barrier layer, a recycled-material core layer, or a color layer.

Typical products: pesticide bottles, food barrier bottles, cosmetics packaging.

All-Electric Servo Drive

A drive configuration using fully electric servo drive. Confirm the extrusion method and machine configuration for your application with the manufacturer.

Typical products: cosmetics and pharmaceutical bottles.

Waley also lists auxiliary equipment for the full line: grinders, mixers, chillers, mold temperature controllers, dryers, loaders, leak testers, and packaging equipment.

Before You Select: Six Details to Confirm

Have these six answers ready before requesting a quotation. They determine which machine fits and what the manufacturer needs to quote.

  1. 1. Material

Which resin or resins will the container use? The material determines the extruder and die-head configuration.

  2. 2. Container volume

What is the container's volume (capacity)? Give the figure in the units you use, for example milliliters or liters.

  3. 3. Container size and shape

What are the container's dimensions, shape, and neck and handle design? Size and shape determine the machine configuration.

  4. 4. Target output

How many containers per shift or per day do you need? Output determines the number of cavities and the level of automation.

  5. 5. Layers

Is the container wall single-layer or multilayer? If multilayer, what is each layer for — barrier, recycled content, or color? This determines whether co-extrusion is needed.

  6. 6. Power supply

What voltage and frequency are available at your plant? The manufacturer needs this for electrical planning.

Applications

Containers made on extrusion blow molding machines serve these industries, per the manufacturer's published application list:

  • Food packagingWater, beverage, and condiment bottles
  • Chemical containersDrums, IBC tanks, pesticide bottles
  • Medical packagingIV, medicine, and reagent bottles
  • Automotive partsFuel tanks, battery casings, air intake pipes
  • Agricultural containersPesticide drums, fertilizer tanks, irrigation containers
  • Daily chemicalsShampoo, detergent, and cosmetic bottles

Frequently Asked Questions

What is extrusion blow molding?

Extrusion blow molding makes hollow plastic containers. Plastic resin is melted in an extruder and shaped into a hollow tube called a parison. The parison is placed in a mold, inflated with air, cooled, and ejected as a finished container such as a bottle, drum, or tank.

What is the difference between accumulator and continuous extrusion blow molding?

In accumulator blow molding, the extruder plasticizes continuously while melt accumulates in an accumulator cylinder, then is pushed out in a single shot. It suits large hollow containers. In continuous extrusion, the parison is extruded continuously. It suits small and medium containers.

What is multilayer co-extrusion?

In multilayer co-extrusion, several extruders feed one co-extrusion die head, so the container wall is built from more than one layer. Typical layer functions include an oxygen-barrier layer, a recycled-material core layer, or a color layer. The exact layer structure depends on the product's requirements.

What information should I prepare before requesting a quotation?

Prepare six details: the material, the container volume, the container size and shape, the target output, whether the wall is single-layer or multilayer, and the power supply available at your plant. With these details, the manufacturer can recommend a machine and a quotation basis.

Where can I see the full product range and specifications?
